As expected this blog has not been as regularly updated as I would have hoped! Saying that, as I am not set up at work, maybe the updates will become more frequent!
So what's been happening? Well, the last two weeks have been filled with briefings, sightseeing, eating, language lessons and schlepping around this great city in the effort to find accomodation. After three days of going into either depressing dives or ridiculously nice (and out of my tight budget) apartments another volunteer, Claire and I have found our abode. woo woo. The apartments consists of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a loune, kitchen, balconies and some very fine artwork. The fine artwork include a tiled mosaic of some wild horse, movie posters and the ugliest wall clock i have ever seems that chimes every hour with a bad 'traditional' english song - this morning it was 'we wish u a merry christmas'! The apartment is located in Ari which is only one sky train stop to my work and four stops to the centre of the city, Siam. The area is full of cute bars, coffee shops and restuarants - mixing together a large expat community and local community. Last night I had dinner at a local eatery and the cost of the meal and a pepsi was the equivalent of $2...so maybe my budget will go further than expected! I will post some photos of the apartment soon for those who aren't going to make it here in the next 12 months.
For those who would like to send care packages, my address is...wait for it....
5/132 Centurion Park Ari Soi 5 Phaholythin Rd subdistrict samsennai district payathai Bangkok 10400.
We also have a land line for those that are not too tight to call - 00116622784755
This week is a bit quiet in the apartment as Claire has been struck down with dengue fever and will be in hospital for the week. Dengue has only recently become a big problem in Bangkok but everyone is shocked that it got one of us so quickly!! Saying that, Claire is in good hands in the best hospital in bangkok. I have never seen a hospital room like it! It has a 42 inch plasma with 70 channels and free internet, a full kitchen including oven, 3 resayurants that deliver what you want (oh and maccas for those heart patients!) and anything else you could ever dream of!
Another plus about Thailand is the ridiculous amount of public holidays that they have. There is one on Thursday and then the government have recently announced that Friday will now also be a holiday! woot! So tonight we are going to plan a 4 day weekend trip somewhere... the decisions!!
Off to do some work and hopefully my posts will become more regular and more exciting as I get into the culture a bit more.
Sawadii kaa!
